Hanle rewards those who plan. The right season can mean the difference between a good trip and the night of your life.
Late April to early June — the awakening
The passes open, the crowds haven't arrived, and the nights are crisp and clear. Daytime temperatures are gentle; nights are cold. The Milky Way core rises in the small hours — worth staying up for.
June to September — the high season
The most accessible months. Roads are open, days are pleasant, and the Milky Way blazes overhead from mid-evening. This is peak stargazing, and peak demand — book early.
We limit guest numbers year-round to protect the quiet and the dark. Summer weekends sell out months ahead.
Late September to October — the connoisseur's season
Our favourite. The air is at its driest and most transparent, the tourist season has thinned, and the autumn sky is spectacular. Nights are cold — but our heated floors and butter tea are made for this.
Winter — for the brave
Hanle in winter is otherworldly and extreme: temperatures fall well below −20°C and access is difficult. We open only for select expeditions. If you come, the reward is a sky of almost unbearable clarity.
A quick guide
- Warmest, easiest: July–August
- Clearest skies: late September–October
- Fewest people: May and October
- Milky Way core, best: June–August
Whenever you come, we'll handle the permits, the transfers, and the acclimatisation. You handle the wonder.
